Abstract

The main aim of the research is to examine the effect of job motivation on the job satisfaction of employees in various institutions in Sunyani Municipality, Ghana. The study is based on a quantitative, cross-sectional survey. A sample size of 140 was selected through the convenience sample method. Primary data was obtained using a questionnaire developed by the researchers, in a 5-point Likert scale format. Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The research findings indicate a significant effect of marital status and job motivation on job satisfaction. Job motivation positively influences job satisfaction whereas marital status negatively influences job satisfaction. The research further indicates that unmarried respondents are more satisfied than married and divorced respondents. The findings suggest that the management of institutions should pay attention to the job satisfaction issue of married and divorced employees of the institutions they work in. Since motivation positively influences job satisfaction, management should pay attention to variables that make employees more motivated to ensure improved job performance. Future research should focus on causal studies using models such as structural equation modelling since the current research is descriptive. Other control variables such as gender and age should be included in future modelling of job motivation and job satisfaction.
