Abstract
Objectives: To report a case of vas deferens duplication found during the course of a radical retropubic prostatectomy.
Case Report: This is a 68-year-old patient diagnosed with prostate cancer, who underwent through a radical retropubic prostatectomy as treatment. During the surgery was observed the presence of three ducts and vesicles with reduced volume. The material was sent to pathology, which confirmed that this is a case of duplication of the vas deferens. Further investigation was performed and the patient had no other changes in organs of the genitourinary system.
Discussion: The duplication of the vas deferens is a rare congenital anomaly with only a few cases described in the literature. It is characterized by the identification of a second vas deferens in the spermatic cord. The embryonic etiology of this disorder is not completely understood. The diagnosis can be given by physical examination; however, the majority of cases are diagnosed during surgical procedures such as vasectomy, varicocelectomy, radical prostatectomy, inguinal hernia.
Conclusion: The non-identification of the duplication of the vas deferens during surgery may result in intraoperative injury, injury to the vas deferens; it may lead to an inefficient vasectomy and generate complications.
