Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a major health growing problem in most countries. The present study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of methanolic extract of Cissampelos owariensis in normal and alloxan induced diabetic Wistar rats at two different concentration i.e. 200 and 400 mg/kg of bw. At the end of the experiment the rats were sacrificed, blood samples were collected and centrifuged to obtain the serum for biochemical analysis. The pancreases were also collected for histological study. Data were analyzed using SPSS package and expressed as mean± SEM. The methanolic extract of both the concentrations exhibited significantly reduced the blood glucose level in normal and diabetic rats. Also the extract significantly decreased serum total serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and AST and ALT levels and at the same time increased liver glycogen content. OGTT was performed by administration of 200 mg and 400 mg of methanolic extract of Cissampelos owariensis and 7mg of glibenclamide as standard drug which significantly lower glucose level at all time points that blood was sampled after oral glucose load. Conclusively, it is evident that methanolic extract of Cissampelos owariensis leaves contains antihyperglycemic agents capable of lowering blood glucose level, hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effect.
