Abstract

Intraabdominal collections are frequently encountered in clinical surgical practice and account for high number of hospital admissions. These treatable entities have good clinical outcome but with a potential of having both morbidity as well as mortality, in the event of delayed treatment. After the advent of newer radiological techniques, the conventional exploratory laparotomy has been replaced by image guided percutaneous drainage; thereby significantly reducing the morbidity as well as mortality. We in present study, report our experience of ultrasound guided percutaneous catheter drainage of intraabdominal collections. We recommend that ultrasound guided catheter drainage of intraabdominal fluid collections is the simple, cost effective, minimally invasive and avoids the administration of general anesthesia with less duration of hospital stay and it has higher success rates than conventional laparotomy.
