Abstract
Tinospora cordifolia is one of the indispensable medicinal plants used in veterinary folk medicine/Ayurvedic system of medicine for the treatment of diverse diseases and recommended for improving the immune system by means of body resistance. Tinospora cordifolia is a climbing deciduous shrub. It occurs throughout the plains of India and also found in Bangladesh, china, Shrilanka and Myanmer. It is popularly known in the Indian system of medicine as Giloe and has been in traditional use for several centuries in the treatment of jaundice, diabetes, skin diseases and anaemia. Wide range of chemical compounds are found in this plant including Aporphine alkaloids, terpenes, berberine, palmatine, tembertarine, magniflorine, choline, tinosporin etc. The alkaloids like berberine, palmatine, tembetarine, magnoflorine choline, tinosporin and glycoside like tinocordiside, tinocordifolioside etc. It’s have been isolated from plant T. cordifolia. Also discussed the bioavailability data of some bioactive compound. The aim of this article is to give brief review about T. cordifolia.
