Abstract

Background: Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the freshwater fish species highly prized by fish farmers in Burkina Faso. The use of plant extracts as feed additives in fish diets to accelerate growth has shown promising results. Detarium microcarpum is a medicinal plant known for its beneficial chemical compounds. However, very little data exist on its use as a feed additive to promote fish growth.

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the potential effect of Detarium microcarpum bark extract on the growth performance and feed utilisation of Nile tilapia.

Study Design: An experimental study was conducted to assess the potential effect of Detarium microcarpum bark extract on the growth performance and feed utilisation of Nile tilapia.

Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the private hatchery of the Faso Fish Expertise and Production Center, in Loumbila village, Oubri region, Burkina Faso, for 90 days.

Methodology: The feeding trial was conducted with 180 fingerlings (initial weight of 7.49 ± 1.43 g) randomly assigned to four groups receiving different doses of D. microcarpum bark extract added to the base diet (0, 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg of feed, designated T0, T1, T2, and T3), with three replicates per treatment.

Results: The results regarding growth and condition factor showed no significant differences between treated and untreated fish. For all treatments, weight gain ranged from 24.69 ± 9.65 g to 28.96 ± 14.45 g, specific growth rate ranged from 1.59 ± 0.35%/day to 1.75 ± 0.42%/day, survival rate ranged from 91.11% to 95.56%, and feed conversion ratio ranged from 1.67 ± 0.15 to 1.87 ± 0.21. The condition factor ranged from 2.22 ± 0.23 to 2.29 ± 0.17.

Conclusion: The addition of D. microcarpum bark extract to the diet had no negative effect on the growth, feed utilisation, or welfare of Nile tilapia.
