Abstract
Aims: This study investigated the effect of cigarette smoking and moderate beer consumption on selected biochemical indices in male volunteers.
Study Design: Experimental study on human volunteer subjects
Place and Duration of the Study: The field work of the study was done in Aba, Nigeria. However, different laboratories were used to analyze the samples collected for the study. Links laboratories, and the laboratories of Abia State University, Rhema University, and Imo State University were engaged for study.
Methodology: Eighty healthy male volunteers between the ages of 25-40 years were selected from Aba metropolis, Abia State, Nigeria and grouped into light smokers, moderate smokers, and heavy smokers as test groups; and those that do not smoke and do not take beer were used as control. Blood samples were collected from the volunteers using venipuncture and used for biochemical analysis.
Results: Results obtained for selected biochemical parameters shows that AST, ALP, ALT and prothrombin time of hepatic organ; lipid profiles and some haematology indices such as haemoglobin, PCV, platelets, neutrophils and lymphocytes were significantly (p<0.05) affected in test groups when compared to the control. ESR was significantly (p<0.05) affected in moderate and heavy smokers against the control.
Conclusion: These results suggest that cigarette smoking and moderate beer consumption have deleterious effects on selected biochemical indices of the male volunteers. The study has revealed the influence of cigarette smoking and moderate beer consumption on selected biochemical indices in male volunteers.
