Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the quality of vegetables sold in the main markets of Foumbot on the resurgence of waterborne diseases in this commune. 100 samples of vegetables whose leaves, roots and fruit are eaten raw were collected and analysed.50 per market (the central and fresh food markets) were taken and analysed following standardized methods. Eggs of Ascaris spp., Ankylostoma spp., Strongyloides spp., nematode larvae, ciliate trophozoites. eggs of Fasciola hepatica and trematode eggs have been detected on all types of vegetables. Ciliate trophozoites (51%) and nematode larvae (31%) had the highest prevalences, while Fasciola hepatica eggs (1%) and trematode eggs (1%) had the lowest prevalences. Vegetables sold in Foumbot are thought to be partly responsible for the persistence of water-borne diseases in the locality. The public authorities should therefore take vegetable quality into account when devising strategies to combat water-borne diseases.
