Abstract

Climate change has prompted countries to intensify efforts to use bioenergy crops as renewable energy source where Vietnam is not an exception. Much attention has been paid by Vietnamese Government on developing bioenergy crops to promote soci-economic growth in order to lessen heavy dependence on the conventional fuels. The average increase in commercial energy consumption-coal, fossil fuels, natural gas, and electricity and petroleum products is 9.0% per year, while, the country’s energy as gas reserves are limited. To meet the future energy demand, Vietnam needs to import gasoline at an increasing rate of 11%-20% in 2020 and 50%-60% in 2050. Current consumption of gasoline and diesel for transportation and industry in Vietnam are greatly increasing. It is estimated that 4.4 million tons of gasline and 10.15 million tons of diesel have been consumed in 2015. The Vietnamese Government has oriented to develop bioenergy (biofuel) industries since 2007 and encouraged the production and consumption of E5 and B5 for domestic use. Since November 2007, the Strategy for Biofuel Development to 2015 and Vision 2025 was approved by Vietnamese Government, which has paved the way for legal corridors, institutions, policies and promoting the investment plan for bioenergy development which paved the way for legal corridors, institutions, policies and promoting the international investment plan for bioenergy development.
