Abstract

Background: In order to scrutinize various anti-microbial agents (inhibition of T cell population) extracted from medicinal plants, most of them are widely used and effective treatment to control various diseases particularly intracellular pathogens.

Aim: The aim of our present study is to investigate its inhibitory potential of antigen (Infectious bursal disease, IBD) specific T cell population using aqueous leaves extract of Calotropis gigantea and Terminalia arjuna for determining its lymphocyte proliferation and CD14 monocyte surface marker in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).

Materials and Methods: For these studies, treatment with aqueous leaves extract (0.5 – 30 mg/ml, 100 µl) in human PBMC using IBD virus (1:100 dilution) as antigen in order to estimate its proliferation and CD14 FITC monocyte surface marker.

Results: Overall the results showed that aqueous leaves extract of Calotropis gigantea and Terminalia arjuna showed remarkable decreased in IBD proliferation and CD14 monocyte surface marker in human PBMC at higher doses.

Conclusion: Altogether, the results suggest that aqueous leaves extract of Calotropis gigantea and Terminalia arjunashowed anti-viral activity with respect to inhibition of T cell population.

Keywords: Calotropis gigantea, Terminalia arjuna, aqueous extract, PBMC
