Abstract

The epidemiological profile of the first outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Nigeria has not been widely reported. Therefore this report which aims at lucid exposition of the trend and pattern of the outbreak is necessitated. The outbreak of the disease which was linked to human-to-human transmission occurred in July, 2014. The index case, a 40 year old male (a Liberian-American) who was Ebola virus Positive traveled to Nigeria and collapsed at the airport on arrival in Lagos, South West Nigeria and was hospitalized. Despite the urgent specialized barrier nursing care provided for the patient in a Lagos Hospital, he unfortunately died in the early hours of 24th July, 2014. Primary contacts were people who received him at the airport, and health personnel who rendered healthcare services to him upon manifestation of clinical symptoms on arrival before it was detected that the disease was Ebola virus associated. Further transmission occurred from person-to-person, but the prompt intervention of the government and stakeholders brought the outbreak to a halt within two months. Surveillance, contact tracing and case management were the treatment and control measures adopted. The total number of laboratory confirmed EVD cases recorded in Nigeria was 19 and 1 probable case that was not confirmed, though circumstances surrounding his death points towards Ebola. Out of the 19 confirmed cases, 7(36.8%) died while 12(63.2%) recovered successfully .If the probable case is added to the number of death from confirmed cases, the total number of death will amount to 8, yielding a fatality rate of 40%.
