Abstract
Aim: To translate the original English version of Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) into Hindi language and assess its reliability and validity for use among elderly in India.
Methods: The 12 items in GOHAI were translated into Hindi using a back translation technique. Psychometric properties of the final version were assessed on 363 elderly participants.
Results: Mean GOHAI-Hi score was 19.43+5.5. Elderly who had perceived poorer general and oral health and dental treatment need had poorer GOHAI-Hi scores. Cronbach’s α was 0.78 indicating a good degree of internal consistency. Test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.957 indicating good stability. Significant correlations were observed between mean GOHAI-Hi scores and missing teeth and prosthetic status.
Conclusion: The Hindi translation of GOHAI demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability and can be an important instrument to measure oral health related quality of life among elderly in India.
