This study was carried out to examine the profitability and constraint to irrigated onion production in Wamakko and Kware Local Government Areas, Sokoto State, Nigeria. Data were collected with the use of structured questionnaire designed to elicit relevant information on the output, inputs, prices of outputs and inputs and some socio-economic characteristics of the farmers in the study area. A total of 120 respondents sampled randomly are used for this study. Descriptive statistics and the Net Farm Income model were used in data analysis. The results showed that gross margin, net farm income and return on naira invested gives an estimated value of N116, 044.60, N93, 144.63 and N 0.91 per hectare respectively. The constraints in decreasing order of magnitude to onion production are poor remunerative prices, lack of market for product and incidence of pest and diseases, inadequate storage facilities, poor access road, unavailability of farm input and non-availability of credit. The study recommends that in planning for an effective small-scale irrigation production, a focus on the problems identified by the farmers should be considered as an integral part of the strategy to help improve the production of the enterprise. Improvement on these problems will undoubtedly improve farmer’s returns.
