Abstract

This paper investigates the rethinking of security and human security in Nigeria: causes and options for food security sustainability. It argues that the attainment of food self-sufficiency in Nigeria has been hampered by the discovery of oil, government policies, conflicts, poor infrastructure, international economic policies,  these among others have made Nigeria a major food importer in the international system. As food is a tool in international politics, a food dependent nation is insecured meaning that Nigeria is food insecured. The paper is anchored on dependency theory and it relied on primary and secondary sources. It concludes that the continued dependence on the developed world for food would lead to hunger, the loss economic base by farmers, poverty, etc. The paper recommends that urgent steps should be taken by government to reduce over dependence on food import.
More funding from Government and private sectors should be encouraged for the agricultural sector. Also an alternative mechanism for marketing board should be set up, to redistribute food in the first instance and secondly sell the excess if any to the export international market.
