Abstract

In the wake of perceived difficulties in speaking English language orally and correctly, this paper explores the challenges of teaching and learning oral English in Nigerian Secondary Schools and the need to involve the audio-visual media for effective learning. This paper recognizes that Oral English has been introduced and taught in Nigerian Secondary Schools for quite some decades, yet the oral English expression of students who graduate into tertiary institutions after their secondary education remains poor due to ineffective methodology. This paper analyses and appreciates the possibilities and abilities of audio-visual media in bridging the gap in teaching and learning the Oral English in Nigerian secondary schools and recommends the use of same by all English teachers in Nigerian secondary schools.
