Abstract
Error correction has been largely disputed in the history of language teaching. Error correction has been proved by some thought schools as nativism while others firmly attach to error correction and consider errors as a bad habit that should be avoided. The present paper reviews the patterns of feedback and error correction techniques in English as a foreign language and English as a second language. Firstly, the paper elaborates on the history and the role of corrective feedback. Secondly, it discusses different types of corrective feedback. Many researchers have given considerable attention to this area, and identified seven types of corrective feedback which are as follows: Recast, translation, clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, explicit correction, and repetition. Thirdly, different types of uptake are explicated. Finally, the paper provides the prospective readers with effective teacher feedback techniques.
