Abstract
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum and bone) disease. A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the restoration and replacement of missing or damaged teeth with artificial ones. A pedodontist specializes in the treatment of oral diseases of children and has to place crowns/prosthesis and restorations. Restorations or prosthesis that hinder plaque removal, create sites where microorganisms thrive and cause periodontal disease. Thus a joint collaboration of the specialists are needed at the treatment planning level to deliver a prosthesis that does not infringe into the domain of the periodontal tissues. This article endeavours to review the various aspects one should keep in mind while placing a restoration or prosthesis.
