Abstract

Dillenia indica (family=Dilleniaceae) is an evergreen tree grown almost all over the world. All parts of the plant (fruit, leaf, stem, bark) are consumable and are reported to have been used since ancient times as a traditional medicine to cure many diseases. D. indica has been documented to have contents such as flavonoids and antioxidants along with other phytocomponents like quercetin, lupeol, β-sitosterol, butellin, terpenoids, stigmasterol, tannin, steroids, etc. that has the potency to cope up with the reactive species and drive the compromised cellular state to survivability. Hyperglycemia is the early and preliminary stage of excessive glucose metabolism and insulin resistance that causes altered/impaired insulin action and finally lead to the complications of Diabetes Mellitus. The present review is made to highlight the molecular mechanisms underlying hyperglycemia, the efficacy and anti-hyperglycemic activities of D. indica.
