Abstract

Brinjal is one of the most important vegetable crops grown all over the world. It is highly nutritious rich in minerals and vitamins. Fruits also posses curative properties against many ailments in Indian System of Medicine. Crop improvement study involves identification of elite genotypes and subjecting them to hybridization to came out with new genetic combination of desirable characteristics. Hence, field investigations were conducted to evaluate growth and yield attributing characters of 112 brinjal genotypes at Venanallur village located in Ariyalur District during 2019 to 2020. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The study established the correlation between fruit yield and other yield components. It also determined path coefficients for all the traits studied as per the analysis of variance. The magnitude of genotypic correlation co-efficient was higher than that of phenotypic correlation for all the traits. Results revealed that fruit yield per plant was significant and positively correlated with number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, number of pickings and number of long styled flowers, whereas negative correlation existed for days to first flowers, days to 50% flowering and number of flowers per plant. Path co-efficient analysis revealed highly positive direct effect for fruit yield per plant through plant height, number of branches per plant, number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit length, fruit girth and number of pickings per plant. Hence, the direct selection can be made considering these traits as the crucial role to overcome indirect effects for development of high yielding brinjal genotypes.
