Abstract

The search for economic accumulation of hydrocarbon in the Niger delta have been enhanced by complementing structural interpretation with attribute analysis in locating optimal well location. 3D seismic data and suite of well logs were used to study the subsurface structure and stratigraphy of ‘’X’’ field in the Niger delta. Variance (Edge method) attribute guided the mapping of faults on the vertical seismic display. Two horizons covering a time window of 600 ms to 1600 ms were identified and mapped on the basis of prospectivity. Seismic to well tie was done to validate the lithostratigraphic surfaces that were mapped. Time and depth structural maps of these surfaces were also produced to evaluate the probable structure harbouring hydrocarbons. The structure trapping oil and gas is a fault assisted closure and 4-way closure. Attribute maps such as sweetness, instantaneous frequency, maximum amplitude, RMS amplitude, average energy were also generated to support the structural information. High amplitude zones correlated favourably with zones of structural highs. Sweetness and Instantaneous frequency attribute extraction were able to delineate the major fault in the field at the deeper horizon picked. It is therefore imperative to site development wells in areas of high amplitude and structural highs to increase hydrocarbon reserve in the study location.
