Abstract

This work describes briefly how ionisation energy can be measured by analysis of optical spectra. A detailed review of sources of both calculated and experimental data is provided. Particulars of simple equations for calculating ionisation energies of multielectron ions are discussed. Trends in ionisation energies especially of transition elements and lanthanides are examined.

Keywords: Ionisation energies, relativistic corrections, screening constants, optical spectra
