INCORPORATING VOICE-BASED BOOKS NAVIGATION TO THE ELECTRONIC LIBRARY

Abstract
The voice recognition technology can be seen as one of the emerging technologies in the world today to provide easy interaction between the users and developed systems. Voice can be used as an input format to give commands to computers, as it can serve as a suitable alternative to the conventional mouse and keyboard interaction, and provide a natural way of interacting with computers. In this paper, a voice-based navigation system was incorporated to the developed prototype digital library of the Department of Mathematics, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. This incorporation enabled users to use voice command so as to find and navigate through the books of interest without taking a keyboard or a mouse into consideration. The result of the evaluation using some sample users from the department has indicated that, the average users’ assessment score for the overall system with voice navigation is 75.05% which is higher than 67.90% for the system without voice navigation. This implies that, the proposed system provides ease of access and interaction to library books to both enable and disable users based on the result obtained.
