Abstract

Low cycle fatigue is caused by cyclic stresses that on exceeding the elastic limit of the material result in low life of the member. The paper presents a review of the methodology used for life estimation of a notched ductile member in low cycle fatigue. Neuber, Glinka and Linear rules are discussed and applied over notches under various types of loads. Some examples are solved to demonstrate the procedure wherein the cases of different notch radii are examined.

Keywords: Crack initiation life, crack propagation life, low cycle fatigue, Neuber’s law, notch
