Abstract

The roles of instructional materials or resources in the actualization of the objectives of basic science teaching and the enhancement of students’ academic achievement were a conundrum with different degrees of assertion. The study therefore was raised to evaluate the roles of teaching and learning materials or resources on the academic achievement of students in basic science whether applying them may contribute to students’ achievement positively or negatively. The scope of the study therefore, was on the students and teachers in the junior secondary schools in Rivers State. A sample size of two hundred students was randomly selected from the population. As a survey study, a validated self-developed instrument with a correlation coefficient of 0.81 was used to generate data for analysis. Guided with four research questions, analysis of the data was done through the descriptive statistic (the mean and standard deviation). The results showed that teaching materials or resources were useful to the actualization and achievements of students in basic science; they also help in the skills development of teachers as well as the students. Promote the sustenance of students’ interest in the subject. Help to bridge abstract and concrete things and promote retention in students as well as helping to save the teachers’ time.
