Abstract

Aims: In these study, we aimed to assess the protective effect of C. longa extract on the BPA-related reproductive disorders in female rats.

Study Design:  It is an experimental study carried out on female rats.

Place and Duration of Study: Department of Biology, life sciences Faculty, Djillali Liabes University, Sidi-Bel-Abbes, Algeria, from April 2017 to July 2017.

Methodology: Forty adult female albino WISTAR rats aged of 7-9 weeks and weighing 173-186g, were divided into four groups. Animals were treated during four weeks by oral gavage with BPA at a rate of 25 mg/Kg of body weight (group1 (G1)), BPA+ C. longa extract (CE) at 100 mg/Kg (G2), CE at the same rate (G3), while controls (G4) received the vehicle (5% Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in distilled water). After that, biometric, biochemical and histopathological effects of the different treatments were analyzed.

Results: Our results indicated that BPA exposure induce a significant increase in body weight associated with a decrease in ovaries relative weight as compared to controls. A significant increase in cholesterol level, but not triglycerides has been also noted in BPA treated animals. Additionally, high levels of lipid peroxidation in liver and ovaries were observed suggesting that BPA is able to induce an oxidative stress in these organs. Furthermore, histopathological findings revealed follicular development disorder associated with a polycystic ovary syndrome in BPA treated animals. On the other hand, the CE was able to conserve normal biometric parameters and lipid profile, prevent lipid peroxidation and the formation of ovarian cysts.

Conclusion: In conclusion, C. longa ethanolic extract successfully prevents BPA-related reproductive disorder in females.

Keywords: BPA, C. longa, female rats`, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, ovarian cysts
