Abstract
This paper investigates the application of thick translation theory to the Chinese white paper Poverty Alleviation: China’s Experience and Contribution with the focus of the translation of acronyms, rhetorical phrases, and culturally loaded terms with both historical and contemporary significance. Through a qualitative research approach of content analysis, major findings stress the importance of thick translation in conveying the underlying cultural and ideological contexts of China’s poverty alleviation policies to international readers. The thick translation theory is expected to address the problem caused by the differences between the source language and the target language and promote cultural understanding. The paper concludes that thick translation is an effective approach for telling China’s poverty alleviation stories to global readers, thus improving the overall quality of translation in official documents and promoting China’s contributions to international poverty reduction efforts.
